If you ask a safari guide for his or her most special sightings, those that have been lucky enough to witness a birth with usually list that amongst the top moments of their career. While watching a herd of about 400 buffalo moving through the long summer grasses, we noticed a single cow who was in labour. An amazing sighting to watch from start to finish. The initial labour lasted for about 35 minutes after we arrived, followed by the birth which was only about 5 minutes. It wasn’t 16 minutes after the drop that the little calf was beginning to use its legs to catch up to the safety of the rest of the herd along side its mother. It was an incredibly intimate thing to have witnessed, the beginning of a life.
